While the entire world is combating the issue of climate change, the Biden administration is planning to meet the major federal contractors. The agenda will be to ask them to take measures to reduce their industrial emissions.
Moreover, the administration is also considering asking them to set their climate targets. It will be a significant step towards greening the Biden government’s sprawling operations. The proposed rule was seconded by nearly 200 countries that attended the UN Climate Change Conference in Egypt.

Here are all the Details about Climate Change Mandatory

It is now mandatory for all federal contractors to openly disclose their greenhouse gas emission stats. Apart from this, they are also asked to explain the risks they are expected to face from the speeding climate change. Under this proposal, all federal contractors getting between $7.5 million and $50 million annual contracts must publicly disclose their emissions for scopes 1 and 2.
Scope 1 includes emissions from sources controlled or owned by a company. For instance, a power plant or a fleet of cars. Whereas scope 2 includes chemical releases from the generation of energy. The US government is one of the world’s largest buyers of goods and services.
It spent over $630 billion on purchases in the previous fiscal year alone. President Biden was always in favor of creating a carbon-neutral government by 2050. He aims to attain this objective by creating a federal fleet of electric vehicles and procuring clean electricity for federal complexes.
Moreover, he also aims to achieve this target by implementing the Inflation Reduction Act and other significant acts. The administration is planning to highlight this climate accord proposal during the UN summit of which Biden is a part.
Besides this, it also plans to present the proposal at a Saturday event featuring Brian Deese, the National Economic Council’s director, and Ali Zaid, the national climate advisor of the White House. Being one of the largest buyers, the Federal government has a crucial opportunity to influence its spending power in helping reduce climate risks and protect taxpayer dollars.
What Experts Have to say
Experts believe that this proposal will be a step forward in achieving the government’s goal of environment conservation, enhancing the flexibility of the federal supply chains, and promoting efficiency.
Apart from this, the Biden government will also focus on issuing a proposal to control methane emissions from various US oil and gas operations. The Environmental Protection Agency will also offer more flexibility to the oil and gas companies to monitor their methane emissions.
It will also allow flyover monitoring with advanced sensors. They have now become new monitoring equipment in the industry. This rule also allows businesses that fly planes or drones with methane detection technology over oil and gas fields at least once a month.
Wrapping Up
This action will help in limiting difficult on-ground inspections to an annual activity. Apart from this, this rule will also grant leniency to enterprises that incorporate constant-monitoring systems. They are often positioned in aggregation with independent certification programs. Its ultimate aim is to develop a technology that seamlessly monitors all the company’s operations and climate change.
