Elon Musk Backed ‘Freedom Truckers’ in Canada get Bitcoin Donations

GoFundMe is an online fundraising platform that was collecting funds or bitcoin for truck drivers protesting in Canada. But, last week, they removed the donation campaign from their website for the “Freedom Convoy” a trucker protest group.

The convoy protests are now in their second week. It started after a group of truckers banded to drive from the western Canadian province to Ottawa, Ontario. They banned for raising their voice against the mandate of COVID-19 vaccine for truck drivers crossing the US-Canada border.

But, there is an interesting turn, the convoy protestors get support from another donation lifeline – HonkHonkHodl.

About HonkHonkHodl – Bitcoin Fundraiser for Freedom Truckers

According to a Canadian publication, the “HonkHonkHodl” is a group of four people. They are Greg Booth, Jeff Foss, and two men who are known as online pseudonyms “Nobody Cariboo” and “BTC Sessions,”. Basically, it is a group of Canadian libertarian Bitcoin evangelists. This crypto fundraiser launched a few days before GoFundMe froze the donation page of truckers protesting in Canada. HonkHonkHodl gained more prominence after the GoFundMe shut down and received donations in large numbers from well-known crypto members.

Jesse Powell donated around $43,592 to HonkHonkHodl. He voiced his support for the “Freedom Convoy”. As of Tuesday last week, around 4,396 contributors have donated 12.50448618 in Bitcoin. This is approximately equal to $543. These funds will be directed to a ‘multi-signature wallet’, which is a cryptocurrency wallet. This needs around two or more private keys in order to make transactions and is controlled by the group’s founders.

About Canadian Truckers Protest

The convoy of Canadian truckers began as a protest against the cross-border vaccine mandate. This protest has become bigger and has grown into a protest of people fed up with vaccine mandates and pandemic restrictions. It also included broader opposition against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The hashtag #TrudeauMustResign is trending on Twitter.

Protestors rallied around the slogan of “freedom over fear,” and appealed to Canadians to stand up against lockdowns, vaccination, and COVID mandates. On the other hand, the Canadian police have raised their concerns over the growing extremist and far-right elements among the protesters.

In between all this, the truckers’ convoy or protesters have drawn support from famous figures like Elon Musk. He tweeted “Canadian truckers rule” in late January. Also, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a statement in favor of protestors. He said that the convoy is “peacefully protesting the harsh policies of far-left lunatic Justin Trudeau who has destroyed Canada with COVID mandates.”

Other U.S. right-wing figures such as Ben Shapiro and Michael Flynn have also raised voices to support the truckers’ protest against the vaccine mandate.

Final Words

The truckers’ protest in Canada against the mandate of vaccination has got support from various known faces like Elon Musk. Also, they got huge donations in form of bitcoin from fundraisers like HonkHonkHodl.
